Julian Robinson (pictured), LSE Director of Estates, has been awarded a 2017 Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Julian will be presented with the prestigious award at a special event in early 2017 and is one of eighteen individuals from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds to be honoured.

The RIBA is a global professional membership body that serves its members and society in order to deliver better buildings and places, stronger communities and a sustainable environment.

Honorary Fellowships are awarded by the RIBA each year to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the quality of architecture. Julian's track record runs from working with Hawkins Brown, Feilden Clegg Bradley, MJP Architects and Will Alsop at Queen Mary University to Grimshaw, O’Donnell + Tuomey, Rogers Stirk Harbour and Grafton Architects at LSE, and shows a developing dedication to raising standards in the arena of university campus architecture.

Professor Marc Raboy, Visiting Professor in the Department of Media and Communications, has been shortlisted in the 2016 Governor General’s Literary Awards for his book Marconi: The Man Who Networked the World, (Oxford University Press).

Professor Raboy will be giving a public lecture based on his book on Tuesday 11 October, entitled 'The Man Who Networked the World: Guglielmo Marconi and the invention of modern communication'. He has also blogged about the subject: The first company that wanted to ‘connect the world’ wasn’t Google or Facebook.

A reminder that the second round of the Institute of Global Affairs (IGA)-Rockefeller Funding Call closes for applications on Sunday 30 October.

This round is again supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. Up to £1.5 million is available under the broad theme of ‘Resilience’. We encourage submissions within one or more of the four subthemes agreed with the Rockefeller Foundation: financial resilience, climate resilience, resilient cities and resilience in post-conflict transitional processes.

The Middle East Centre invites applications from LSE colleagues for academic collaborative projects in social, political, and economic sciences between academics at LSE and Arab universities. These projects may involve collaborative research or capacity building and have a budget of up to £120,000.

The new academic year is underway, and so is the launch of a new Green Impact year. Green Impact is a national environmental award scheme run across the country, now in its 8th year at LSE. It allows departments to form a Green Team and complete simple actions to help to reduce their department’s environmental impact.

If you’re a veteran of Green Impact or are a newcomer to it, everyone is welcome to our launch event to learn more about this year’s criteria and all the opportunities to get involved. We also have limited places available on our next Step Up programme beginning on Tuesday 18 October. This three day programme is run over a three month period and is ideal for individuals who have management responsibilities but perhaps no formal training, and will provide participants with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 3 Award.
