LSE’s Department of Media and Communications and UNICEF Innocenti are convening the second Global Kids Online network meeting at LSE on 21 and 22 March.

The network will be presenting the lessons learned from international research findings on children’s internet use and will develop research and policy recommendations for the launch of the toolkit in late 2016.

The meeting will host close to 40 academics and UNICEF staff from 14 different countries, including Argentina, South Africa, Serbia, the Philippines, Montenegro, India, and Ghana. A report from the meeting will be published on the project website shortly after the meeting.

On Sunday 17 April from 8am-8pm LSE IT services will be intermittently unavailable throughout the day. IMT will be carrying out essential maintenance during this time, performing key upgrades to the network.

IT services will experience intermittent outages throughout the day. Please be aware that while services may be available for brief periods, they are at risk of losing connectivity to the LSE network for the duration of the maintenance period.

Affected services include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Campus WiFi
• Campus PCs, printers and telephones
• H: space and any shared network drives
• Moodle and LSE For You

Message from Jon Foster, LSESU Education Officer

Nominations for the LSESU Teaching Excellence Awards 2016 are now officially open until Sunday 3 April.

The Students’ Union runs the nominations and selection process. Last year over 550 staff members were nominated in varied capacities, with 1,362 nominations overall. Categories for awards are designed to include everyone from inspiring lecturers to compassionate wardens or administrators, so we hope the winners will reflect this.

You can let your students know that they can nominate online here.

The awards event is due to take place after the School’s Education Symposium on Wednesday 11 May. Make sure to take a note of it in your calendars, so you can come along to support your colleagues, friends and possibly even your own success!

Although staff members cannot nominate, we really hope that you can get behind the awards and that departments will encourage students to recognise someone who has made a difference.

The Students’ Union Advice Service provides free, independent advice to all LSE students. We advise on housing matters (such as deposit issues and contract queries), academic matters (such as appeals and complaints) and administer hardship and childcare funds.

We are open during term time and vacation periods and students can contact us via email (su.advice@lse.ac.uk), phone (020 7955 7158) or in person. We run daily drop in sessions (Monday-Friday 11am-1pm) however can offer appointments outside of these times should students prefer.

Please signpost any students who you think could benefit from our support. This is particularly important during the exam period, when students may wish to discuss exceptional circumstances or, once they have their results, the appeals procedure.

This Easter, the Rejoice Group at LSE will be collecting Easter eggs for the homeless.

All eggs collected will be donated to The Soup Kitchen in Central London. The Soup Kitchen creates a sense of belonging and community atmosphere for the homeless, elderly, lonely and poor.

This course will provide guidelines on good practice when writing web content with a specific focus on creating and writing for blogs. It is aimed at staff who are already blogging and those who are considering using a blog to communicate with their audience. This is a practical class with a mix of presentations, discussion and hands-on activities.
