New ideas and technologies are not the product of a few far-sighted geniuses but arise through societies and social networks acting as ‘collective brains’, says new research from LSE and Harvard University.
The paper, published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, argues that, over evolutionary time, individuals who mimicked other successful individuals - eating the foods they ate or hunting with the tools they used, for example - became successful themselves without necessarily understanding why.
A new study has shown that there are relatively few working class actors and that they earn less than their middle class equivalents because of a ‘class ceiling’.

Around LSE
Students: we need you!
In September 2016, LSE will be launching LSE LIFE, a specially designed centre for students in the library where a wide range of academic, personal and professional development opportunities will be on offer. We are keen to ensure that LSE LIFE is as relevant to students as it can be.
To this end, we are setting up a student panel that will meet approximately once a month (with wine and nibbles!) between now and the end of the academic year to discuss various aspects of this new initiative.
We’re currently seeking around 20 students - undergraduates of all years and taught master’s - to be part of the panel. If you’d like to be involved and share your experiences of LSE to guide our thinking, please let us know by Friday 4 March by emailing lselife@lse.ac.uk and telling us your name, department and year.
