Google's Eric Schmidt on 7 ways computers will change our lives On Friday 14 October, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet, visited LSE to discuss the next wave of British computing innovation in computer science education, digital skills, and machine learning. Did you know that social reformer Dr B R Ambedkar first studied at LSE 100 years ago in 1916? Or that his portrait and bust can be found on campus? This selection of stories from LSE’s history recognises and celebrates BME staff, students, alumni and visitors through the years. How do you encourage one of the world’s biggest CO2-emitting industries to reduce its carbon footprint? Just tell its employees they’re being watched.
Worldwide, airlines produced 781 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2015 as they transported more than three billion passengers and 35 per cent of the world’s trade. To put it into perspective, if the industry were a country, it would be the world’s seventh largest emitter. That’s a lot of greenhouse gas in anyone’s language.
But thanks to LSE PhD candidate Greer Gosnell, a field experiment with Virgin Atlantic pilots has helped to cut the airline’s carbon footprint by up to 2200 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
A toolkit aimed at improving the lives of the urban poor across the globe will be rolled out to a potential new audience of 400 million people this week when it is translated into Spanish.
Developed by researchers from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in partnership with UNESCO, the toolkit provides a global model for bottom-up social development, based on the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
Denis Konoplev, LSE graduate, former LSE Generate winner, and Co-Founder and CEO of Disperse.io LTD explains why LSE Generate funding was so important to him.
"LSE plays host to the some of the smartest people I have met, and indeed some of the smartest people in the world. The calibre of ideas generated and exchanged at the university can be intimidating, yet inspirational. This being said, students fall into common traps either through a lack of time or possibly a lack of confidence. Maybe even a lack of belief in that they can make a tangible impact or that they have the ability to turn an idea into a reality.
"My time at the LSE was the first time I dared to go beyond the beaten path of academia and investment banking. I stopped thinking about which modules to take based on what grade could be achieved or how it would fit in with an exam schedule at the end of the term.
If so, you will need to submit your application by Friday 11 November.
Special examination arrangements are known as Individual Exam Adjustments (IEAs) at LSE. If you think you need special examination arrangements, or have had extra time, the use of a PC, a scribe or a reader, or other provision in the past, you will need to arrange for an IEA with the Disability and Wellbeing Service.
It's not too late to sign up for a language course this academic year

You may be aware of vibrations which can be felt on some parts of the campus. These are being caused by the removal of the basements of Clare Market and St Clement's buildings on the Centre Buildings site and are passing through the ground into adjacent buildings.
Please be assured that this is nothing to be concerned about. We are working well within tolerance set by the project engineering team and Westminster City Council, who receive regular reports from the monitoring stations. Monitors are positioned throughout the site to record vibration levels and are being reviewed throughout the works by the contractor working on the site. We expect that the vibrations will continue for another 4-5 weeks.
Further details about how the vibrations are monitored can be found in the following newsletter.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works. If you experience or witness any issues in relation to the above, please contact Jas Sidhu on j.sidhu@lse.ac.uk or 020 7955 7778 and she will forward your concern to the relevant person within the Capital Development Team.

LSE LIFE opened as planned on 19 September in time for Welcome Week. During our first week of operation, we hosted 30 orientation sessions delivered by colleagues from the Library to approximately 1500 students from across the School. Throughout the week, students visited the new facilities and spoke with LSE LIFE student advisors about how we could support them in the upcoming weeks. Students had another opportunity to find out about LSE LIFE during our daily orientation sessions held in Week 1 of Michaelmas Term.
Since the official start of academic year on 26 September, we have been very busy with more than 80 events and over 1,500 students attending LSE LIFE talks and workshops and dropping in for study advice. This has already had a positive impact:
"Talking to you was very helpful in alleviating a bit of the stress I was feeling about the exams. What was most helpful was that you listened, understood what I had to face in the next couple of months and gave advice that was short and to the point. In addition, you drew from personal experience. I am very grateful for the advice.” (1st year undergraduate student, Geography and Environment).
Over 400 students attended workshops on academic reading, and 500 students have already booked places on our upcoming essay writing workshops. There’s still space if you’re interested! LSE LIFE also hosted five LSE Careers Fairs, attracting nearly 3,300 students.

Plug in, tune in!
If you haven’t visited LSE LIFE yet, we’re on the ground floor of the Library and it's proving to be a popular place to study as well as a place for events. Space 1 is where all the advisory sessions take place – perhaps you want to drop in for one-to-one essay advice or help with your CV? Then this is the space for you.
If you sign up for one of our workshops, then come along to Space 2 but make sure you book in advance!
If you just want a place to study on your own, collaboratively with your peers or take part in more structured work such as the Maths Support Centre, Academic English Language Hour, Group Work Support and course-specific GTAs office hours, then Spaces 3 and 4 are the place to go. At times (after 6pm), these spaces are used for special events, which means that you may have to find alternative study spaces in the Library for a few hours. Our different spaces are kitted out with moveable desks, whiteboards you can use and enough plug sockets to keep multiple-device-users happy!
We're open Monday to Friday 10.00-19.00 and on Saturday 10.00-18.00. To book a place on one of the workshops, or find out more about events at LSE LIFE, go to our website.
